A high-powered committee at the Center yesterday shortlisted the names of three IPS officers. Among them, Karnataka DGP Praveen Sood has been appointed as CBI Director.
Karnataka DGP Praveen Sood has been selected as the new CBI director. A high-level meeting was held in Delhi yesterday in which Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chaudhary participated.
It is this committee that selects the new CBI chief. Adhir Ranjan Chaudhary opposed the appointment of Praveen Sood during the meeting. Sood is eventually appointed as the CBI director despite opposition from a key member of the committee.
Importantly, Praveen Sood’s tenure so far has been highly controversial and he has also been accused of working for the BJP several times. Sood hit the headlines in March when Karnataka Congress President DK Shivakumar accused him of siding with the BJP government in the state.
Sivakumar also demanded the arrest of the state’s Director General of Police, claiming that he was deliberately registering cases against Congress leaders.
