Akola clash: One person dies, Maharashtra Police undertakes investigation

A clash broke out between two communities in the sensitive ‘Old City’ area of Maharashtra’s Akola around 11.30 pm on Saturday. 1 person has died in this clash while 8 people have been injured.

Police have detained 26 people in this matter, District Magistrate has ordered imposition of Section 144 in four police station areas of the city to maintain law and order. The violence erupted after a religious post went viral on a social media platform.

Members of both communities pelted stones at each other. Meanwhile, some vehicles were also damaged. Police used tear gas shells to disperse the rioters.

Deputy Chief Minister of the state Devendra Fadnavis is monitoring the situation. Fadnavis appealed to people to maintain peace.

Security has been tightened in the city after this incident. 1,000 State Reserve Police personnel have been deployed in the city.
